"The Counselor" (R)
Michael Fassbender plays a lawyer tempted into setting up a one-time drug deal for one of his shady clients, played by Javier Bardem. It's directed by Ridley Scott, and based on a screenplay by Cormac McCarthy, the guy who wrote "The Road" and "No Country for Old Men". Ridley dedicated the movie to his brother Tony Scott . . . who committed suicide in August of last year.

"Bad Grandpa" (R)
Johnny Knoxville returns as his old man character, Irving Zisman, in a "Jackass" movie that actually has a PLOT for a change. In this one, Irving gets stuck with his 8-year-old grandson and is taking him across the country to find his deadbeat dad. Along the way they pull hidden camera stunts on unsuspecting people, which include . . . his wife falling out of the casket during her funeral . . . the kid dressing in drag and busting into a stripper routine during a children's beauty pageant . . .

ARTISTIC FREEDOM IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY                                                    www.franklincompass.com

Jennifer Oberholzer

I am a writer. Inspiration for what I write comes from anywhere......something I see, hear, or just ponder. Here are some of my works. Enjoy.

Summer Symphony

Went out to sit and watch
the lightning roll 'cross the sky

Sat on the porch to relax and enjoy
and pass the evening by.

But the longer I sat, the louder it got
the noise was so deafening

I think every critter created decided
it was time to come out and sing

The crickets were chirpin', the locusts would chime
the bull frog joined in with three quarter time

The breezes were blowin', the sky lit up bright
no better way to spend a warm summer night

But the noise just got louder as the symphony sang
as all harmonized with a bit of a twang

My head was a'ringin, just buzzin with sound
as everything made noise from sky to ground

Enjoyable it was and I'd listen again
It was a wonderful way to wait for the rain!

Pondering

Having spent so many years

Hiding behind my self built walls

I've been able to tune out things

Only answering certain calls.

It doesn't mean I have no care

For others who've been hurt

It simply means I'm cautious

Protecting my own worth.

Believing there are lessons

In all things, good or bad

I now must look within myself

To know why I'm so mad.

For people have no right

To end another life

No matter what their pain or fear

No matter what their strife.

Taking innocent babies

Before they're even born

Or killing precious children

Forever we will mourn.

This world is lost and dying

Full of hatred, anger and sin

We must begin to search

And look so deep within.......

To find out what our hearts hold

To seek out what we need

We need to find those answers

Making changes in word and deed.

The change begins in each of us

Love and forgiveness we must share

Reach out and help another

A burden gladly bear.

It's time to begin removing walls

Stop hiding out from others

Take time to lend a helping hand

To our sisters and our brothers.

Hey! I'm Katie Kirby, 17 years old, and I live just outside of Baltimore, MD in Westminster.  I love to draw and this piece was one I did in an art class at my high school.  I chose to send in this particular one because it was the first one I really ever did and it made me realize that maybe I have some talent at something and persuaded me to pursue that.  The drawing itself is a photograph of me weaved together with a photograph of a dandelion and the entire thing is done in charcoal with white charcoal in some areas.

Knotty By Nature
www.knottybynature.net

As a native and current resident of Maryland, I live on a 21 acre horse farm with a new 720 ft2 wood shop just minutes from Boonsboro. Woodworking has been my passion through childhood, middle and high school, and college, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a woodworking course offered. Through graduation, it remained one of my favorite classes.

After college, I continued woodworking as a hobby until 1999 when I was fortunate enough to be taken under the wing of a fantastic woodworker who taught me more than any classroom ever could have. And I found myself getting paid for what I loved to do!  He introduced me to the lathe, but the interest of turning bowls, pens, and hollow forms didn’t strike me until a few years ago.

Now, in my own wood shop, I have 3 lathes. Each with its own job:  Two for pens, finials, and other small items; and one for bowls and platters up to 28” in diameter.

Most of my turning is done with local woods like walnut, cherry, ash, and others, but a large percentage of my turnings are maple. This is mainly due to me having a very good supply of some quite spectacular maple. Maple is one of those woods that can have nearly every kind of figure, including:  Spalting, burls, curl, ambrosia, bird’s eyes, and feathering. It can also range from very light in color to much darker.

I don’t cut down any live trees for woodworking (or for any other reason). My works come from trees that have come down in storms, died naturally, or that I’ve saved from becoming firewood when taken down by arborists.
