For today’s Weird News Wednesday, I thought I would highlight a story that came out of an area near where I grew up in North Carolina!
This guy labeled a video of his trip to Switzerland on TikTok, but intentionally mis-labeled it as Gastonia, NC.
Well, Olivia Garcia from Florida saw the video and thought that “Gastonia” looked beautiful and the name Gastonia sounds like “something out of a Disney movie”. Garcia and her family were driving up to the Carolinas anyways, so she had them make a detour to Gastonia, NC.
“I realized when we were like 20 minutes out that something wasn’t right,” Garcia said. “There were no mountains in sight, only ‘run-down gas stations’ and no working bathrooms,” Garcia said.
This is absolutely hilarious to me, because Gastonia is the subject of many, many jokes, all about how “that’s where all the hicks come from”, “it’s all rednecks”, “everyone in that town marries their cousins”, you get the idea lol! For someone to think it’s a beautiful mountain town just sends me into a fit of giggles every time I think about it.
So just remember: never EVER believe everything you see on the internet! ALWAYS do your research!
Also, if you’re looking for a beautiful mountain town to go to in North Carolina, I used to live in Boone and it is gorgeous! Asheville, NC is very pretty as well!
