If you didn’t know, I LOVE to read. So I thought I would compile my favorite books I read in January!
You can click the titles to find them on Goodreads and see more reviews, plus a full synopsis of each book!
1. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
This historical fiction book takes place in Nazi-Occupied France during WWII. Two sisters find their way to survive and join resistance efforts. A very well written story but fair warning: it’s quite sad given that it takes place during WWII.
I’m a huge Mel Brooks fan so I was really excited to read this! Mel Brooks is hilarious and tells the story of his life, how he got into comedy, and some behind-the-scenes for all of his movies/plays! Very good.
3. The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
A sweet story about a man who works for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, and is given a mysterious assignment. This man who works as a case worker for orphanages that house Magical Youth goes to a highly classified orphanage to review their practices. The only thing: this orphanage houses the strangest and deadliest Magical Youth in existence.
4. The Magnolia Palace by Fiona Davis
An interesting historical fiction based on the Frick Mansion/Museum of the late 1800s, and an artist’s model of the same era that meet. The model, Angelica, who is the muse of many statues in NYC, gets swept up in a murder investigation. Angelica goes to work as a ladies maid in the Frick Mansion to hide out, and the Frick family does not realize who she is, despite many pieces of her work on display throughout the house. Very unique story!
5. The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling)
A book written by J.K. Rowling under the pen name of Robert Galbraith. There are VERY mixed reviews for this book, especially given that this book is very different than the Harry Potter series. I actually thought it was a really good detective mystery, and while her writing was different in style than Harry Potter, I still thought it was good! Seriously though, this book is dark and also disturbing in some parts, so if crime thrillers are not your thing, I would skip this one.
